7 Signs You Have Mold Growing in Your Home
Most of these show up before any growth is actually visible. If two or three apply to your house, it's worth a test rather than waiting for the rest to appear.
1. A musty smell that comes and goes
Especially one that's stronger in one room, or worse after rain or on humid days. Smell is often the earliest sign, showing up well before you can see anything.
2. Discoloration on drywall or ceiling tile
Yellow-brown staining, not just black spotting, is a common early indicator — especially in a ring pattern around a roof or plumbing leak.
3. Cupping or warping hardwood floors
Usually points to moisture coming from below, which in this area often means a crawl space vapor barrier issue rather than a spill from above.
4. Condensation on windows or ductwork
Regular condensation means the humidity in that space is high enough to support growth even without a visible leak.
5. Allergy-like symptoms that improve when you leave the house
Not proof on its own, but a pattern worth paying attention to, particularly if more than one household member notices it.
6. A recent leak that got "dried out" but not inspected
Surface-dry doesn't mean the material underneath is dry. Growth can establish inside a wall cavity within 24–48 hours of a leak, well before drywall shows a stain.
7. Visible spotting in a bathroom that keeps coming back
If bleach or a bathroom cleaner clears it for a few weeks and it returns, that's a ventilation problem, not a cleaning problem — and it usually means growth is established somewhere the cleaner can't reach.
